Apple iPad Mini models in the Indian market range from the old yet stylish iPad mini 2, the mid-level iPad Mini 3 and the latest iPad Mini 4. These are all lucrative products in their own ways, and that’s also the reason that makes a choice between them challenging and confusing.
To help you solve this problem of plenty, we have created a summary of the key features of each of this model and also done a comparative analysis to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these iPad Minis.
The iPad Mini 2
At the time of its release in October 2013, Apple highlighted iPad mini 2’s 7.9-inch Retina screen. It was the most requested feature, and people loved the second gen Mini for delivering it.
It sports a dual core cyclone processor which clocked at a speed of 1.3GHz and powered with the Power VR G6430 for graphics. For the camera, Apple packed the iPad mini 2 with 1.2 MP front-facing camera, and an 5MP of a rear-facing camera. It houses a 6470mAh battery.
For storage, the iPad mini 2 comes in 16, 32, 64 and 128GB internal storage options. It came with iOS 7 preinstalled, but it’s upgradable to the latest iOS 10.2.
The iPad Mini 3
Sporting an unchanged screen size of 7.9-inches, the iPad mini 3, released in October 2014 is similar to its predecessor in many ways.
It runs on the Dual-core Cyclone (ARM v8-based) processor clocked at 1.3GHz of speed. It has the same 6470mAh battery as well. iPad Mini 3 has similar camera configuration with 5MP rear and 1.2MP front cameras.
It is available in the 16, 64 and 128 GB variant. Mini 3 was rolled out with the iOS 8 but can be upgraded to the latest iOS version.
The iPad Mini 4
Sporting an almost identical dimension – height of 203.2 mm (8 inches), the width of 134.8 mm (5.3 inches) and thickness of 6.1 mm (0.24 inches) – the iPad mini 4 is the latest version in the market.
It was released in September 2015 and runs on the Dual-core Typhoon processor clocked at a speed of 1.5GHz.
It is powered by Apple A8 chipset with 2GB of RAM and comes in the 16, 32, and 64 GB variants of internal storage memory. It is powered by a 5124mAh battery and has 8MP rear-facing and 1.2MP of front facing cameras.
The iPad mini 4 was rolled out with the iOS 9 preinstalled and can be upgraded to the latest iOS 10 versions.
Here are a few differentiating features
Although the Apple iPad mini 3 sports the same features as the iPad mini 2, Apple added the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and Gold Color option, which makes it a better and more tech savvy device.
However, both iPad mini 3 and the iPad mini 2 have many common features like the 7.9-inch Retina screen and its 2048×1536 resolution. Under the hood of both these devices is the 64-bit A7 processor and the M7 motion coprocessor, packed with 1GB of RAM.
Also, the cameras on both iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2 are 5MP on the rear panel and 1.2MP on the front panel.
The iPad mini 4, however, provides some very useful updates.
Although the screen remains at the 7.9-inches size, it displays a large 2048×1536 resolution. It also has more storage with an added 128GB option. There are more colour options as well.
To sum it up, iPad Mini 4 is undoubtedly is the best choice available right now, with enough benefits that justify the price tag. Having said that, Mini 2 is by no means a bad choice. It’s a good tab for beginners. iPad Mini 3 is a good compromise between the two models. It’s not a colossal update over the 2, but the Touch ID integration is enough to win some takers for it.
